Team Toni

The Athletes

Jessia Ennis-Hill

Jessica Ennis-Hill | Heptathlon

2012 Olympic Champion
2 x World Champion
2010 World Indoor Champion
2010 European Champion2005 European Junior Champion

Way before all the gold medals Jess, aged 11, met Toni Minichiello at Sheffield’s Don Valley Stadium, where Toni was running a youth session. And the rest, as they say, is history. No other coach-athlete duo has been together all the way from the beginning to the top of the Olympic podium. And never a cross word between the two of them.

John Lane

John Lane | Decathlon

2014 Commonwealth Games finalist (4th)
British Indoor Heptathlon Record Holder

Having spent most of his youth in Australia surfing and playing rugby John took up the Decathlon after a couple of bad shoulder injuries. Since then a lot has happened, most notably beating the British indoor heptathlon record in 2014. He even survived a stint living in Toni’s spare room. Not known for wearing excess clothing.

Louise Bloor

Louise Bloor | Sprinter

2014 Commonwealth Games Bronze (4x100m relay)

Louise first came to people¹s attention as a reality TV star!! She won the BBC¹s show, Born to Win, a show looking for up and coming sports stars, aged 18. Louise is not just a world-class athlete; she is also a fully qualified nutritionist working for British Diving, Judo and Taekwondo. I haven¹t yet heard her thoughts on Toni¹s obsession with chocolate and doughnuts, but I¹ll save that for another day!! Louise is currently on the comeback from a back injury and is looking for a spot in GB¹s woman¹s 4x100m squad.

Lucy Hatton

Lucy Hatton | Hurdles

2015 European indoor Championships silver (60m Hurdles)
3rd fastest Britain ever with 7.90 (60m Hurdles)

Lucy is one of the newbies to Toni’s team. Known for her multi-coloured locks she certainly stands out when haring down the track. You may also remember her as the athlete who put herself on eBay in search of a sponsor; you certainly can’t say she isn’t entrepreneurial! Lucy has begun work with Toni this year aiming for a Rio spot.

Karla Drew

Karla Drew | 100m Hurdles

Originally from Exeter, Karla has completed an MSc in Sports Psychology at Sheffield Hallam University, and will be starting a PhD with Liverpool John Moores University in September 2016. Karla will be looking to become a qualified Sport Psychologist in the next few years alongside training full-time.  I will certainly be tapping her up for some advice on the football results after she turned a £5 accumulator bet into £50,000 – all thanks to Panama drawing with Canada.

Nikita Campbell-Smith

Nikita Campbell-Smith | Triple Jumper/Multi-Eventer

Nikita is another young multi-eventer in Toni’s team but she also specialises in the triple jump as an individual discipline. Studying sport psychology at Sheffield Hallam alongside her training Nikita is a bright star to keep an eye on in the future.

Jo Rowland

Jo Rowland | Heptathlon

Jo has been working with Toni since 2014. Hopefully she has got used to his straight talking manner by now. Having completed her studies at Brunel University she is now able to focus on her fully on her athletics, weighing herself down with medals at the Yorkshire County Championships this May.

Alicia Barret

Alicia Barrett | Hurdles

UK under 18 record in the 100m hurdles 13.40 seconds

Alicia is one of the youngest members of the team, and that’s saying something when you look at the average age. She really came to attention when she took the UK record for the U18 100m hurdles last year at the youth world championships. She is now juggling her training with studying for her A levels, yes A levels, I’m not sure what most of you were doing during you’re A levels but it probably wasn’t a productive as becoming an elite athlete!

Seun Okome

Seun Okome | High Jump/Triple Jump

Bucs High Jump bronze 2016-05-19

Seun is another newbie to Toni’s team, specialising in high jump and triple jump. Seun, from Manchester, came to Sheffield to study at Sheffield Hallam University alongside his training with Toni.

The Support Team

Paul Ttereve

Paul Ttereve | Assistant Coach

Paul is a seasoned athlete who has competed as a sprinter for a number of years and still competes regularly in senior competitions. However as well competing himself Paul is now involved in coaching and has become Toni’s partner in crime having formed a bond over a love for both coaching and Turkish delight.

Mick Hill

Mick Hill | Javelin Coach

Mick is a bit of a legend in British Athletics having won a bronze medal in a World Championships and two silver medals in European championships. Mick is one of the experts working with Toni for for many years Toni to help Jess and his other athletes with their Javelin. Mick is also known for his ability to hit anything with a tennis ball within 3 attempts.

Dr Richard Higgins

Dr Richard Higgins | Team Doctor

Dr Richard Higgins, as the name may have given away is the teams’ doctor. Richard is also the team doctor for Sheffield Wednesday football team when not working with Toni and the rest of the team at the EIS. If you study David Beckham’s ‘For the Love of The Game’ documentary closely you’ll see Richard in the background as he followed David around the world on their record breaking football journey. Richard is an integral part of the team and very nifty with a needle and thread.

Alison Rose

Alison Rose | Physiotherapist

Alison is one of the world’s leading physiotherapists. Amongst others she has worked with Dame Kelly Holmes and the Brownlee’s. She has worked with Jess for over ten years. Toni claims the strongest thumbs and the sharpest elbow in physiotherapy.

Derry Suter

Derry Suter | Soft Tissue Therapist

Derry is a soft tissue therapist and facial release expert. Like Dr. Richard he’s worked at Sheffield Wednesday FC and his other clients include Squash legend Nick Matthew. He’s worked with Toni and Jess for over ten years. He is the Daniel Craig lookalike in the team (according to him).

Mark Ellison

Mark Ellison | Nutritionist

Mark is Jess’ nutritionist and Louise’s boss. He’s worked with Man Utd, Andy Murray, Sale Sharks and British Boxing (to name a few). He’s nearly at his tenth birthday of working with Toni. When sporting a beard he bears an uncanny resemblance to Chris Bonnington.
